Wake Up Lucy

People have been searching a long time to go beyond ordinary life, like those poor characters trapped in the Matrix films, there has to be other realities.

Alternate states of consciousness can be experienced through drugs, meditation, trauma or video games (a rather dull one).

One method is called lucid dreaming. A contradictory state of dreaming where you know you're dreaming while asleep. The phenomenon has been studied by clinical scientist Stephen LaBerge.

He taught his subjects how to trigger a lucid state by having them look at their hands several times a day to determine if they are awake or dreaming so they can trigger awareness when unconscious and take control of the dream. I decided to give it a try and dutifully practiced the technique.

I call the night crew of the subconscious the dream guys and they would try to cue me by having me hold an object in my hands or buttoning my shirt in a dream.

I finally managed lucidity once but in my excitement, I exclaimed, "Ok now what?" and really woke up. That just pissed off the dream guys.

"You woke her up?" The dream boss glared at the controller in disgust. "How long has she been trying this? I'll tell you-months and you ruined it. Right, next dream, you're wearing the chicken suit."  Everyone gave up at that point.

Sometimes I kinda feel that other dimension out of the corner of my eye but when I turn to look- it’s gone. Still, I keep trying for that magical insight to no avail. I continue to meditate before going to bed, look at my hands and ask-- "Am I awake or dreaming?"

I managed to do that a few times many years ago. I tended to wake up as soon as I realized I was dreaming but one time I managed to have a little adventure. Nowadays I drink too much in the evening to be able to.
