The Problem

The problem isn't a gun, the problem is an all or nothing solution to any problem is  using a gun. We can talk endlessly on the causes: anger, hatred, isolation, and all it will do is lead us down the same path of hopelessness these men chose to end with killing. We need to address one thing before we can untangle all the other issues.

The unfettered access to high powered weapons is not what the second amendment intended, but any suggestion of restraint is viewed as an attempt to annul any gun ownership.

We need to change our attitude about guns. They need to be treated with respect and  some fear. Unfortunately, a gun is often viewed as just another utility or gadget like a washing machine or a car. Should we let someone with no training or experience buy an SUV to drive around town? No.

A license, liability insurance and a safety course should be required to buy a gun. That means knowing how to properly handle it, understand its use and keep it out of reach of children.

We need the second amendment for protection but we also need to be protected from unreliable use--like the unlicensed, inexperienced idiot in a car who has no sense of responsibility.

The worst part of this latest tragedy is that nothing constructive will happen. This massive incompetence will result in despair and much rhetoric but little action because of greed and government indifference.
