I'll Do It . . . Later

We buy a book hoping it will it inspire us to lose weight, get organized, help our hobby or --fill in the blank. Instead it sits on a shelf or coffee table collecting dust. We join a gym with full intention to get in shape and be healthy. Well, there's a waste of money.

Now the guilt trip begins, we should have, why not, what are we waiting for. We give up and feel like failures. Motivation is a strange thing, it can't be pushed or ordered around. We slump on the couch in defeat and decide patience is on overrated virtue.

Then one day without a clue, we pick up the book-better yet, we realize we don't need to read it and do the things we planned. The urge to go an long walks, dance around the living room to music or do yoga becomes a daily habit. The desire was there all along waiting to be awakened.

Self improvement is often a vague notion of what we think makes us better. We change when we're ready, no matter how long it takes, the most important lesson is not to push the river but knowing when you're ready to dive in.
