Let's be honest, we've all spent a lot of time the last two years watching TV, binge streaming on the net, cruising You Tube and otherwise waste our time. I am no exception. When I'm not struggling with writing- which is often- I gravitate to Reddit or You Tube for harmless visual stimuli. If you're no good at finding the rabbit hole on your own check out Bored Panda or Atlas Obscura for compilations of --stuff.
My regulars on YouTube are home renovations, crafts and off beat science. The home renovation/builds include a German teacher remodeling a tiny home a Texas farm house by a perpetually perky woman who can handle a power tool.
My favorite is a couple in France fixing up a chateau as a BnB. It's not so much the renovation ( which are good) but the antics of the husband Phillipe, who thinks he can do the carpentry, electrical and plumbing himself, with no previous experience. He can't. His British wife handles his attempts with resigned patience. He's a pro photographer so it's shot and edited well and the humor is droll whenever the real master carpenter Benoit helps out.
The go-to hobby site by far is Adam Savage's Tested in his "cave"-the shop is a maker's wet dream. It would be hard to duplicate his so called "one day builds" but his enthusiasm and expert attention to the process are infectious. The most important thing I've learned is cardboard prototypes for any project are the GOAT.
Last
but not least are the Try Guys. They started on Buzzfeed (another site for useless information) but went on their own a few years ago. I first saw them trying
out a roller try guys try out a roller coastercoaster then later
saw them play with dolls.
Really, how can you resist watching four grown men act like seven year old girls playing with dolls or completely fuck up cooking stuff without a recipe?
The biggest gripe with You Tube are the intrusive ads. The repetition and abrupt interruptions are infuriating. Oh, you can avoid them -for a price. Thanks Google for monetizing, in the worst possible way, everything you touch.
Or you can read ad free blogs like mine.
