Ask an Expert- Learn a new skill

I was watching a YouTube channel of a woman doing her own renovation and she mentioned watching tutorials to use a router.

When movable type was invented and books became affordable, the big sellers were "how to" books since so many experts died during the black plague. DIY manuals and videos are still popular to learn how to do something.

On the other hand, she could have just asked the contractors doing other work on her house, they would have been glad to show her because people love to demonstrate their expertise with genuine pride in their skill and knowledge.

When I do research on a subject for writing, I always seek out knowledgeable people to give me full information. I'm always astonished at how generous they are with their time. People want to share what they know with others.

There's only so much one can learn from a book or video because direct experience is the best teacher. It's how expertise is passed on, from master to apprentice. When you learn from an expert you discover little tips and secrets only they can impart. This is so important in an age where it's cheaper to just throw something out when it breaks and get another one. It's wasteful and diminishes practical skills.

So don't be shy the next time you want to learn something, ask an expert.
