life is stranger than fiction

I'm sitting around one day thinking up story lines cause I'm a writer see. Anyhow I came up with a great plot line for a story. Our hero is working for a law firm that seems too good to be true but hey we're a paranoid lot. He's a great family man, got a wife and two adorable kids, nice house. You know the drill.

One day he's driving to work when he's almost killed by a car that narrowly misses him. Shaken he decides to take out life insurance to protect his lovely family if -God forbid-something should happen to him when he discovers the firm he works for already has a policy on him and- here's the kicker- They are the beneficiaries.

Was that near miss merely an accident? or something else? Is he worth more to the law firm dead or alive? Is this an original idea or what?

Oh wait- insurance companies are already doing this to their employees in real life. Never mind. Leave it up to greedy bastards to come up with a scam like this. On the other hand it would make a good Denzel Washington movie.

How to change the world

In this world of conflict, division and negative reaction to just about anything it's nice to see some people have found a way to think outside of the box, whether it's using musical theater to protest or finding fun ways to modify behavior. The world needs more of this.

railroads poor, airlines rich

In one corner we have people bellyaching about Amtrak losing $32 per passenger. Like this is a horrible waste of our tax money. Yet the government gives a very generous subsidy to airlines no one is even aware of, because you know flying is so much better, environment friendly and cost effective than those nasty old trains.

The same airlines that insisted, begged for a bailout after 9/11 because business suffered (sob) and the government gave them money with no string attached then said airlines promptly went bankrupt and couldn't pay those loans back. Sorry.

How much arre the airlines costing us compared to Amtrak?

I dare you

I have no idea what I’m doing here

I am a brilliant person in search of a function. I always thought of myself as a slacker who didn’t accomplish anything because I don’t have a job and let’s face it that’s what you got to do to pay the bills and be a “useful member of society” right? However upon further reflection that’s the strange part because I can do everything BUT get a job.

I know more than most people about writing having written short stories, articles and two novels. I took up silver smithing and sold jewelry at the Saturday market. I went to college and got a two year degree in graphic design. I taught myself upholstering and have redone several chairs and a two couches. I studied tarot for fifteen years to the point of giving readings to my teachers. For two terms I taught an opera appreciation class at community college. I studied aikido for over fifteen years and have a black belt. I learned carpentry from my mom- a professional and did considerable remodeling of my house and built a Japanese style tea house in the back yard from scratch.

I can look at a blank map of the US and name all fifty states, most of the capitals, major rivers and mountains ranges. I kill at Trivial Pursuit. I had to answer two questions per turn when I played with my family. I once qualified as a contestant for Jeopardy. I have an encyclopedic memory for every movie I’ve seen and some I haven’t. Only imdb.com knows more. I have excellent “object identification” skill which is fancy way of saying I can find anything. I can walk through a house once and then draw a floor plan with the location of all the rooms, windows and doors.

While other kids in high schools were skipping class to smoke dope and hang around during recreation time, I was in the study hall reading everything I got my hands on, textbooks, newspapers, magazines anything. They thought I was weird cause I read. Which meant nothing coming from functional illiterates.

So here I am, almost fifty and unable to get a job. I worked at a full time job for eight months in my adult life. I can talk to anybody from a street crazy to an a academic but can’t navigate a job interview.

Everyone talks about having a purpose in life, how important life is, how precious. Bullshit. The only thing that counts for validity in this culture is having a career, social status and an income. None of which I have or have ever been able to acquire. Am I a loser? According to society-absolutely. This is the message I hear loud and clear every day. How is it that I have learned all these skills, done so much but have so little to show for it? A matter of value. Our culture doesn’t value the eccentric, the genius or the creative person who thinks outside the box. I have tried- and I mean this before God- I have tried everything to fit in to no avail.

I dare any of you to find a place in society where I belong that is meaningful and productive because I sure as hell can’t. I dare anyone to go beyond words of encouragement and help me understand there is something I can do to make my way in the world because I haven’t a fucking clue.

the dinosuar

I don't have a cell phone with a bluetooth, don't use a blackberry, twitter or text message. I don't use a GPS or use google to get where I'm going. I don't download music to an ipod and I certainly don't download porn. Although I do blog - for about six people who read it- I refuse to have my own website with a domain. I write actual letters on paper to people and send them by mail.

I am a dinosaur and proud of it.

The end of the world part 2

The Mayan Long Count ends around Dec. 21, 2012 but as David Stuart, a specialist in Mayan epigraphy at the University of Texas at Austin points out "It's a special anniversary of creation, the Maya never said the world is going to end, they never said anything bad would happen necessarily, they're just recording this future anniversary.”

The release of the film “2012” will only add fuel to this misconception. The idea of an apocalyptic end is so Western, so Judeo-Christian, just read “Worlds in Collision” by Velikovsky to understand the origins of our deep seated fear of the unknown around us. From the Wikipedia entry on Velikovsky:

“The catastrophes which occurred within the memory of mankind are recorded in the myths, legends and written history of all ancient cultures and civilisations. Velikovsky pointed to alleged concordances in the accounts of many cultures, and proposed that they referred to the same real events. For instance, the memory of a flood is recorded in the Hebrew Bible, in the Greek legend of Deucalion and in the Manu legend of India.. . .Velikovsky put forward the psychoanalytic idea of "Cultural Amnesia" as a mechanism whereby these literal records came to be regarded as mere myths and legends.”

The end of the world as we know it, is not such a bad thing really. We go about our business thinking nothing much changes like “Groundhog day”. In reality nothing ever stays the same. It has happened many times whenever there was a cosmic leap in understanding. When things that were obvious but unnoticed suddenly caught our eye. Subtle (and not so subtle) forces have always been at work recreating the world we precieve.

In Florence Italy c. 1430 artist and architect Flippo Brunelleschi discovered how to do perspective drawing, creating a three dimensional image on a flat surface. Now an artist could create a painting with depth that mimicked what our eyes saw. While everyone went crazy using this new technique something extraordinary happened. It revolutionized the way people looked at the world, not just visually but philosophically as well. That it wasn’t until the 15th century we figured this out is astonishing but to every artist today it’s obvious. Galileo did it when he turned the telescope on the sky and confirmed, much to our dismay, we are not the center of the universe. It’s only in the past ten years that traditional medicine has realized there is a mind-body connection.

Years ago I remember my mom and sister complaining that the sun felt warmer and brighter as they dodged from tree shade to shadow. Oh come on, I thought they’re just over reacting, our family tends to be melodramatic. Sometime later I read a curious little article in which scientists were puzzled by data that indicated the sun seemed to be brighter but they didn’t know why. How many other people felt the same way as my relatives but never said anything because it just sounded crazy? As Twain put it “ A man with a new idea is a crank until it works.”

The signs of change are all around us if we look carefully. There are also signs we ignore because they seem too bizarre to be true. What will cause the next cosmic leap in thinking and bring on a new age? Global warming? The string theory in physics? The internet? It could be anything . The end of the world means the start of a new one, so on December 12, 2012 a glass to a new beginning.

Some days. . .

It's Monday , it's rainy and I'm in a bad mood. Some days are like that.

Keep your hands to yourself

I've said this before but this time I really mean it.

I realize people have passions, opinions and want to stick our nose in other people's business -it's what we do best. I also think that if State A has an issue they are voting on then State B should mind it's own business and stay out of it. No out of state contributions, volunteers, or PACs. What is happening in Maine or California or Washington is a great concern to the states resident's and should ONLY be decided by those resident voters without influence from others.

I truly believe that States have individual rights that should not be infringed upon. I'm not an constitutional expert but jeesh people, this on is a no brainer. Keep your hands out of other people business. You don't tell me how my state runs things and I won't tell you how your state runs things. ok?

I'm done now.

Pet Peeves

Pet peeves, we all got them. It’s important to get them out of our system each once in a while so they don’t pile up like dirty laundry. Here are a few randomly chosen bits that make me crazy.

Bad Timing
I swear this happens all the time and always infuriates me. I can be home ALL day and leave the house for ten minutes and when I come back, there is a blinking light on my answering machine telling me that once again I missed a call. This is followed by several minutes of high decibel swearing. People ask “Why do you let this bother you so much?” The reason it upsets me is because it’s a reminder that I’m never in the right place at the right time.

Bad timing follows me like a dark cloud. I leave the house and that’s when it starts raining, I miss the phone call from a potential employer and the UPS delivery man - who happens to be the man of my dreams- was delivering a package I have been waiting for days to arrive but -oops, too bad, I wasn’t there. No doubt my funeral will be ruined with some timing miscue.

Political Bickering
Man am I tired of Democrats and Republicans flinging mud and insults at each other like kids at a playground. Has everyone in politics regressed to a 10 year old? There are good ideas from Republicans and Democrats but one can’t take a little from each. Oh no. One must staunchly toe the party line with no variations allowed. How immature. The public has become just as polarized. If you are Republican you are ultra conservative and if you’re Democrat you must be a radical left winger. Meanwhile those of us in the middle are left to throw our hands up and say the hell with both sides.

Remember the sniping after America lose the Olympic bid? Andrew Sullivan had it right.

“Criticizing a president is one thing - and important. Hoping he fails - even to the point of celebrating a national loss - is a sign of partisanship that has become pathologically blind to any sense of perspective or patriotism.” He’s conservative and I’m liberal but we agree on this.

Hypocrisy
Say what you really mean instead of something that is patently asinine and false. Stop saying “We must protect children from ( fill in the blank)”. What they really mean is “I’m offended and want this (fill in the blank) stopped immediately.” Yeah well no one gives a shit you’re offended. I’m offended every day but you don’t see me writing to the local newspaper to bitch.

Whenever a elected official is caught with his pants down don’t say “They need to set a better example for society.” they were elected to office, not sainthood. Frankly if a mayor, senator or school principal acted like a saint it would just be creepy. let them have a few personality flaws like the rest of us and let’s be real about it ok?

Foreigners on American TV.
Rachel Griffins ( Brothers and Sisters)- Tim Roth ( Lie to Me), Joseph Fiennes ( Flash Forward) and Hugh Laurie (House) are all British. Simon Baker (The Mentalist ) and Anthony LaPaglia are Australian. LaPaglia does an American accent better than nature speakers but should we be getting elocution lessons from an Australian? Meanwhile these well trained actors are taking jobs away from inexperienced American actors who have no clue what an accent is. The nerve.

Then there are people on cell phones, bread crumbs on the counter ( it’s a weird genetic thing I got from my dad, go figure) Leaf blowers and objects placed on the wall in even numbers instead of artistically correct odd numbers. The list is endless.

Equal rights for everyone

I have been writing about the gay rights battle and you may be asking yourself- why is a regular straight gal like me is so worked up about the subject?

Well for one thing I like gay people, I have very nice gay friends who don’t shove their beliefs on me any more than anyone else. I have always rooted for people who are misunderstood, marginalized and discriminated against- I can relate. Most importantly this is an issue where I know I’m on the winning side because every objection to equal rights for gays is utter bullshit. Lies and delusional paranoia are easy to defeat when you have facts on your side.

This is not a tangled, complex issue like abortion, gun control, or tax reform where there are plenty of intelligent defenders on both sides who present thought provoking arguments pro and con. Oh no, this one is bigotry pure and simple.

From the opponents point of view no God fearing, clean living heterosexual should even deign to acknowledge the existence of those people so any objection will do. Especially ones based on irrational fear. It worked in the past with blacks, commies and pot heads. Anyone outside of the “norm” is to be eradicated like a cancer that might spread and destroy our carefully constructed reality. Oh please.

The reality is that there has been no discernible effect on marriage whereever same sex marriages have been legalized. They aren’t forcing religions to marry them. They aren’t indoctrinating children to their lifestyle, although it wouldn’t hurt to give them a better fashion sense.

As much as I love to watch people look ridiculous as they froth at the mouth over nothing, one can only bear hysterical screeching for so long- from drag queens or sanctimonious hypocrites.

What this all boils down to is a group of tight asses on an uppity crusade trying to deny a tiny percentage of the population the same legal rights everyone else because they have nothing better to do with their time. Get back to me when you decide to tackle real issues like poverty and child molesting clergymen. Until then I’ll stick with the tolerant, fun loving gay folks.

Military Intelligence at Work

Despite the urgent need for service men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan, The military is kicking people out simply for being gay- which has nothing to do with their ability to do their job. Admittedly straight men freak out at the idea of being near a gay man but 36% of those discharged are women even though they only make up 14% of troops. Why the disproportion? It’s simple. Gay women won’t put out and these narrow minded, all beef patties resent anyone they can’t fuck to prove how manly they are. Or maybe I’m just reading too much misogyny into it.

And the award goes to. . .

Since everyone is putting in their two cents worth of opinion about this I might as well too.

President Obama has received the Nobel Peace Prize-for what? I like the guy but he hasn’t done anything yet. He hasn’t even fulfilled any campaign promises. Well, that’s expecting a lot because politicians will say anything to get laid- I mean elected. That said I think you can see this as cynical politics or hopeful optimism. Andrew Sullivan said it best:

. . .this is premature and this is thoroughly deserved. Both are right. I don't think Americans fully absorbed the depths to which this country's reputation had sunk under the Cheney era. That's understandable. And so they also haven't fully absorbed the turn-around in the world's view of America that Obama and the American people have accomplished. Of course, this has yet to bear real fruit. But you can begin to see how it could; and I hope more see both the peaceful intentions and the steely resolve of this man to persevere.

This president has done a huge amount to bring race relations in this country to a different place, which is why the far right has become so vicious in attacking him and lying about him. They know he threatens their politics of division and rule. He has also directly addressed the Muslim world, telling some hard truths, and played a small role in evoking a similar movement of hope and change in Iran, and finally told the Israelis to stop cutting their nose off to spite their face.”

I think it’s interesting that a Nobel Prize went to the man who was beaten by George Bush -Al Gore and a Nobel prize is given to the man who replaced him. Until now the world has treated America like we are radioactive. This is at least an improvement. It would be remarkable if Obama accomplishes a fraction of the things he has set out to do.

Corporations vs. People

Check this out:

In yet another egregious case of the rights of a corporation over the rights of an indivual, I present KBR, a subsidiary of Halliburton and a notorious Corp. on the greed train running full speed these days that doesn’t deserve any of our tax dollars at work.

Whatever you think of Al Franken, he did the right thing to stand up for a citizen’s constitutional right to seek justice. The men who voted against this amendment might have voted differently if it were their wife or daughter being gang raped and denied a chance to defend herself against her employer’s criminal neglience. It’s one thing to fuck the public, it’s another thing when you fuck your employees and try to get away with it.

You're not sick, you're just faking it

For those who think we don't need health care reform guess again.Oh yeah and don't get sick. If you are a convicted felon in prison or a federal employee then you get the best care available. All others pay through the nose.

The world is coming to an end in 2012. . . or not

The Aztec “long Count” is coming to the end of an age on December 12, 2012 (12/12/12 get it?) . It seems everyone from Edgar Cayce, Native Americans and Australian Aborigines have been saying for decades something big is going to happening in 2012. Oh my God, it’s the end of the world! It’s going to tilt on it’s axis, here comes drought, disease, world war!!!

OK everybody calm down. Before you panic, sell your house and run for the hills let’s put things in perspective here. Wasn’t this supposed to happen in 2000? Have you ever heard of a metaphor? All the prophets, soothsayers, sages and really smart future seeing people use them. They weren’t being to be coy or clever. They could only understand so much. The future can be fuzzy at times, not to mention subject to change without notice when you throw in human influence. Every prediction of the world coming to an end the next Friday the 13th in a leap year has come and gone.

We have a fondness for disaster- the more disastrous the better and we are deeply afraid of the unknown. We love to assume that all hell is going to break loose at once- just look at how it’s portrayed in movies. So it’s not surprising that prognostication is met with anxiety and special effects. This is another chance to yell the sky is falling.

What’s really happening here, spiritually speaking, is we are growing up and it’s been going on for more than 15 years. We’re changing our attitude toward each other and the world around us in a major way. Some have reacted to this spiritual growth spurt badly. The rise of fundamentalism is the equlivant of digging in one’s heels. An intrenched reaction to change. Whether it’s “The only way we can be saved is to turn to God as we literally interpet His laws” or “ Don’t be silly, there is no evidence of global warming being a long term trend”. There’s a lot of denial here.

There are physical changes going on connected to 2012.
“Scientists believe the Earth is overdue for a geomagnetic reversal, and has been for a long time, even since the time of the Mayans, because the last reversal was 780,000 years ago. Critics, however, claim geomagnetic reversals take up to 5,000 years to complete, and do not start on any particular date. There is major sunspot activity predicted or more precisely the solar maximum in the 11-year sunspot cycle is forecast to occur on or near December 12, 2012.” But obsessing on an arbitrary date taken from an ancient calendar is neither constructive or useful. Change comes slowly; our world is not going to magically change overnight or be destroyed instantly. There may be cosmic forces at work but it is up to humanity to adapt to those changes.

The age of adolescence is over. No more drunken frat parties, no more unbridled freedom from responsibility. No more wasting Mother (Natures) time, energy or resources. Time to grow up campers, whether we like it or not.
